Jeff Rea and band

Singing for as long as he can remember, Jeff Rea’s first break was winning the first MLT Songwriting Award in 1980. His first album ‘First Steps’ followed as did TV appearances on Threshold Promotion Company, Stars on Sunday, Dixie Chicken and That’s Country. Here he met US Country star Gary Morris. A friendship formed and Jeff spent 10 years in Nashville touring with Morris and writing songs for his publishing company. He recorded his second album ‘Full Circle’ in Nashville before returning home with his wife Margie and young family to the family farm in Crookston, West Otago. He has continued to write and perform, recording his third album ‘Who I Am’ in Nashville in 2018. Some material for the album was co-written with musician and good friend Mike Hood, who often accompanies Jeff on stage, along with his two sons, James and Ben. ‘It’s pretty special to be able to play music with your kids’ Jeff reflects. He has continued his contact with Morris and has joined him for his Christmas tour each December. He has also Jeff’s interest in musical theatre has seen him perform the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera for the West Otago Theatrical Society. He has also been working behind the scenes, helping form the New Zealand Songwriters Trust and is currently the chairperson of Bayleys Tussock Country Music Festival in Gore.
